In late 2020, following Auburn 5th Grader Emilie Emerson’s presentation to the Auburn City Council suggesting the City fund the purchase of water bottle filling stations/fountains to place in strategically selected locations for the needs of the many endurance athletes who live or visit the area, the Endurance Capital Committee was tasked by the City to settle on a pilot location for the unit. Then they needed to find the appropriate unit, and purchase it with a portion of ECC budget funds. After much debate about the location, followed by the need to find not just a U.S ADA compliant unit but also a California ADA compliant unit, the task was accomplished.

The location settled on is next to the Overlook Park where the Tevis Cup Trail Ride finish area is undergoing a massive upgrade in a partnership between Auburn State Recreation Area and the Western States Trail Foundation. This location is also a hugely popular start/midpoint/finish for equestrians, hikers, and runners throughout the year. Having a CA-ADA compliant unit that is also highly vandal-resistant in this location will service a very large number of people as they begin, pass through, or end their treks into the canyons. The letter shown below was sent to the City of Auburn’s Endurance Capital Committee from the President of the Western States Foundation to thank the ECC for this contribution. Watch for updates about its installation that will occur sometime during the location’s renovation.

The ECC will be seeking out more locations and fund additional units, as it continues to carry out young Emilie’s will-received suggestion.

Bob Richardson, Auburn’s City Manager and long-time supporter of the Endurance Capital  theme and Committee, has officially retired, and the quest for a replacement is in the works.

The City has enlisted Peckham & McKinney, a Careers in Government company to spearhead the search for applicants. Check out the listing, which includes “Auburn California Endurance Capital of the World™” in the job description.

The ECC and everyone health- and endurance-sport-minded will sincerely miss Bob’s presence. He and his wife Jennifer were so supportive of our committee and all it does. Jennifer was the one who coined  the phrase “All Trails Lead to Auburn…”, and working together they produced the popular “Auburn Style” posters and postcards. Bob and his side kicks Harvery Roper and Monte Reynolds were regulars as a photographers and videographers at Auburn endurance events, especially WSER and Tevis, and they freely contributed their work to the ECC to use in our promotional materials.

Just a few of our ECC memorable, collaborative efforts with Bob:

  • Helping to develop the initial Auburn Endurance 100 Challenge.
  • Setting up big screens and coordinating City support for the popular Endurance Capital Street Parties/Expos managed by Shannon Weil and held in Old Town.
  • Working with us and the Arts Commission on the Nevada Street  Rip Cronk Dawson Tanks mural project.

  • Helping us chalk “Endurance Capital of the World™” in huge letters on High Street for both the Tour of California bike races that came to Auburn.

  • Supporting the ECC’s plan (created by Harvey Roper) for the Endurance Zone section of the Streetscape in Downtown Auburn.

  • Assisting the ECC with its early outreach efforts at local events like the Home Show, and the WSER and Tevis Finish lines.
  • Helping to coordinate and mediate the extensive Auburn State Recreation Area Advisory SubCommittee Trail User Group Meetings (2013-2014) to help provide the ASRA General Plan trail construction options, the user groups’ Safety/Etiquette guidelines and the popular ECC ASRA Trail Map.

The ECC thanks you for all you have done for the City during your tenures here. We sincerely hope that your retirement will provide you and Jennifer with more time to join us in our activities!

On 13 April 2019, Endurance Capital Committee member Phil Sayre gave a presentation to “Leadership Auburn” class about the ECC’s Mission to support endurance sports in the greater Auburn area. The presentation explained the many trail and aquatic sports options available to Auburn residents (see photo). Traditional hiking, running and equestrian sports were covered, as well as some emerging sports (including open water swimmimg, mountain biking, and whitewater kayaking).  Volunteer options for those wishing toojoin the ECC Team were also provided.

The ECC is happy to do similar presentations to other local community organizations. Please contact ECC Chair Robert Miller.
